Columbus, OH - November 29th, 2010

I was in Columbus for 24 hours on a quick trip. The airport was very easy to get in and out of and the Doubletree hotel on Front street was excellent. I arrived around 5pm on Monday night and walked the mile and a half from my hotel to the German Village. It was a great walk, especially the brick sidewalks of South 3rd street. Tasteful Christmas lights adorned most of the quaint houses - it feels like some British back alley.

My first stop was at a tavern called The Old Mohawk. Mostly to warm up. It's a very old institution dating back to 1933 when the turtles for the excellent soup were kept in a mud pit in the basement.

For supper, I was looking forward to Schmidt's Sausage Haus und Restaurant. They had a buffet with a variety of sausages, kraut and the like... ultimately I wasn't thrilled - the sausage lacked a snap and the sides ended up a lot like cafeteria fare.

I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the Pastrami sandwich I had at Danny's Deli near my hotel. It was perfect - a great lunch shop that's sadly under siege from a Jimmy John's recently built adjacent.
